The Red Sox farm system is back for another week, and honestly, it might be the cleanest part of the organization right now.
The big-league club is doing big-league emotional damage, but down on the farm? We’ve got Franklin Arias launching baseballs, Anthony Eyanson winning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, Portland looking like must-watch Double-A baseball, and Enddy Azocar getting bumped to Greenville after mashing in Salem.
That’s the good shit.
This week gives us a fresh set of series across the system. Worcester hits the road against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Portland heads to Binghamton, Greenville comes home against Asheville, and Salem hosts Hickory. SoxProspects’ system schedule has Worcester and Portland on the road Tuesday through Thursday, while Greenville and Salem open home series Tuesday night.
So let’s get into it.
The Farm Series Snapshot
Worcester Red Sox at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
Triple-A road series. Worcester needs a reset after a rough stretch against Rochester. The WooSox were getting hit around, the bats went quiet in spots, and Sunday’s rainout didn’t even give them a clean chance to wash it off. Now they get the Yankees’ Triple-A squad, which always adds a little extra stink to the week.
Portland Sea Dogs at Binghamton Rumble Ponies
This is the headline series. Portland is carrying the farm right now, and they’re taking the Arias/Eyanson show on the road. Arias has been ridiculous, Eyanson just got the weekly honor, and the Sea Dogs’ pitching staff is giving Red Sox fans a reason to obsess over Double-A box scores.
Greenville Drive vs. Asheville Tourists
Greenville is back home, and the big note is Enddy Azocar. SoxProspects lists Azocar as promoted to Greenville on May 26 after his Salem tear, with his Salem line sitting at .295/.344/.530/.874 and six homers. That’s a fun little spark for a Drive team that needed something fresh.
Salem RidgeYaks vs. Hickory Crawdads
Salem gets Hickory at home, and this is a week for the RidgeYaks to show they can be more than chaos. They’ve had ugly blowouts, then strong rebounds, then individual flashes. Low-A baseball is a blender, but there are still names worth tracking.
Top 5 Prospects To Watch This Week
1. Franklin Arias — Portland Sea Dogs
This is the obvious one.
Arias is the headline. He just had his first Double-A two-homer game, he’s sitting near the top of the system, and every time he does something loud, Red Sox fans start acting like they just found the next franchise savior.
SoxProspects has Arias ranked No. 2 in the system with a wild current-level line of .346/.422/.662/1.084 and 11 homers.
That is not normal “good prospect” stuff.
That is “stop what you’re doing and check the box score” stuff.
This week in Binghamton, the question is simple: does the power keep traveling? If Arias keeps hitting like this away from Hadlock, the hype gets even louder.
2. Anthony Eyanson — Portland Sea Dogs
Eyanson is fresh off being named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, and SoxProspects now has him ranked No. 3 in the system after jumping from No. 6.
That’s a big-ass move.
He threw five no-hit innings last week, handled Double-A quickly, and now everyone is looking at him like one of the more important arms in the system. Over The Monster’s minor lines recap had him carrying a no-hitter for five innings in Portland’s 2-0 win over Reading.
This week is about backing it up.
Winning Pitcher of the Week is great. Now stack another clean outing and make it feel like the rise is real.
3. Jake Bennett — Worcester Red Sox
Worcester needs something to feel good about, and Jake Bennett has been one of the better Triple-A arms to watch.
SoxProspects has Bennett ranked No. 6 in the system, with a 1.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts over 29.1 innings. He also just had an 11-strikeout outing in Worcester’s extra-inning loss, which was one of those brutal “starter did his job, team still ate it” games.
If Worcester is going to get off the mat against Scranton, Bennett-type starts are what they need.
4. Enddy Azocar — Greenville Drive
This is the fresh name for the week.
Azocar got promoted to Greenville on May 26, according to SoxProspects, after putting together a strong Salem run. His Salem stats shown there: .295 average, .530 slugging, .874 OPS, six homers.
That’s the exact type of promotion that makes a farm preview fun.
Now we get to see how the bat plays at High-A. Salem is cool, but Greenville is a better test. Better arms, better plans, less room for cheap damage.
If Azocar shows up and starts raking right away, the system gets another outfield name to circle.
5. Yoeilin Cespedes — Greenville Drive
Cespedes keeps making noise.
SoxProspects has him ranked No. 20 in the system, but the bat has been much louder than that ranking suggests: .314/.369/.572/.941 with nine homers.
That is serious production.
Greenville gets Asheville at home, and this is the kind of series where you want Cespedes to keep forcing his name up the board. If Azocar brings fresh energy and Cespedes keeps hammering baseballs, Greenville could be way more fun this week than it was last week.
Honorable Mentions
Blake Wehunt — Portland
Still deserves attention after being part of that insane 20-strikeout shutout. SoxProspects lists him at No. 18 with a huge 14.6 K/9 at Portland.
John Holobetz — Portland
He threw six shutout innings in the Arias two-homer game, and SoxProspects has him at No. 11. Over The Monster called out his six shutout innings in Portland’s 2-1 win.
Johanfran Garcia — Portland
Walk-off knock last week, plus he’s one of those catching prospects worth keeping tabs on. Portland has a lot of dudes doing interesting stuff at the same time.
Avinson Pinto — Salem
Young shortstop, big swing last week, and exactly the kind of Low-A player where you don’t overreact but you absolutely keep watching.
Brooks Brannon — Portland
The catching/first-base bat remains a name to monitor, especially if Portland keeps getting tight games where one extra-base hit can swing the night.
Worcester Red Sox Preview
Worcester needs to stop the bleeding.
The WooSox got rolled by Rochester in multiple games last week, including a 12-1 loss where they managed only two hits, and they also had Sunday’s game postponed by rain.
That’s not exactly a confidence-building week.
Now they head to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which means two things: road series and Yankees affiliate. So yeah, not the softest place to reset.
What Worcester needs this week:
They need starting pitching to stabilize the whole operation. Bennett is the name to watch, but the rest of the staff needs to stop putting the offense in holes. The bats also need to stop going dead for long stretches. Triple-A is weird, but losing ugly is still losing ugly.
Who I’m watching:
Jake Bennett, Nate Eaton, Anthony Seigler, Mikey Romero, and whoever can give this lineup some actual punch.
Portland Sea Dogs Preview
Portland is the crown jewel right now.
Arias is on fire. Eyanson is climbing. Wehunt and Halligan were part of the 20-strikeout madness. Holobetz shoved. Garcia walked it off. This is the team with the most electricity in the system.
Now they go to Binghamton, and this is the perfect test.
Not because Binghamton is some unbeatable monster, but because it gives Portland’s top guys a road series after a loud home week. Can Arias keep the power coming? Can Eyanson back up the award? Can the pitching staff keep carrying low-scoring games?
What Portland needs this week:
Keep the momentum without becoming a one-man Arias show. Arias can be the headliner, but the Sea Dogs need Garcia, Brannon, Nelly Taylor, and the rest of the lineup to keep adding pressure.
Who I’m watching:
Arias first. Eyanson second. Then Wehunt, Holobetz, Garcia, and Brannon.
Greenville Drive Preview
Greenville gets Asheville at home, and the timing is perfect because Azocar just got there.
That gives the Drive a fresh storyline immediately.
Cespedes has been raking. Azocar is promoted. Kyson Witherspoon still has the talent to be interesting even with a rougher line. Justin Gonzales is producing too, with SoxProspects listing him at .305/.392/.500/.892.
There’s enough here to make Greenville worth watching again after a choppy week.
What Greenville needs this week:
Cleaner pitching and more complete games. Last week had weather weirdness, doubleheader nonsense, and inconsistency. This week, just play real baseball. Let the bats breathe, get Azocar comfortable, and stop letting games get sideways early.
Who I’m watching:
Azocar, Cespedes, Gonzales, Kyson Witherspoon, and Henry Godbout.
Salem RidgeYaks Preview
Salem hosts Hickory, and this is the classic Low-A chaos watch.
The RidgeYaks had a weird week: ugly blowouts, strong bounce-backs, good individual games, and enough errors/walks to remind you this is still development ball. Over The Monster noted Salem got crushed 16-2 earlier last week, then later bounced back with better performances, including a 10-2 win over Lynchburg.
That’s Salem in a nutshell.
You’re not just watching wins and losses. You’re watching who adjusts.
What Salem needs this week:
Throw strikes. Make routine plays. Keep the young bats moving. That sounds boring, but at Low-A, boring fundamentals are how you stop the blowup innings.
Who I’m watching:
Avinson Pinto, Stanley Tucker, Angus King, Andrews Opata, and the arms who can actually land the plane without giving away free baserunners.
What The Top Guys Need To Keep Doing
Arias needs to keep doing damage without getting reckless.
The power is real, but the next step is staying disciplined when pitchers stop challenging him like idiots.
Eyanson needs to keep attacking the zone.
The stuff is playing. The rise is real. Now it’s about avoiding free passes and making Double-A hitters earn everything.
Bennett needs to keep giving Worcester real innings.
Triple-A can get ugly fast. He has to be the adult in the room.
Azocar needs to make a clean first impression at Greenville.
No need to do too much. Just bring the same bat speed, same confidence, and make the High-A arms prove they can beat him.
Cespedes needs to keep forcing the conversation.
A .941 OPS with nine homers is loud. Keep hitting, and the ranking will have no choice but to catch up.
Final Farm Watch Preview Takeaway
This week is about seeing what’s real after the noise.
Arias had the loudest week possible. Eyanson won the award. Portland looked like the heartbeat of the entire system. Azocar got promoted. Greenville gets a fresh bat. Worcester needs to recover. Salem needs to clean up the chaos.
That’s a good farm watch week.
The big-league Red Sox may be hard to trust right now, but the system has real movement. There are bats climbing. Arms popping. Promotions happening. Names forcing their way into the conversation.
So yeah, the major league club might be stress theater.
But the farm?
The farm has juice.
And this week, all eyes should start with Portland in Binghamton, because Franklin Arias and Anthony Eyanson are starting to make Double-A feel like the main event.
