Derrick White Is Too Damn Good To Be This Quiet
I love Derrick White.
Let me say that first before anyone starts acting like this is some fake fan hit piece.
I love the Buffalo. Always have. Guy is one of those players who makes winning plays that don’t always get clipped up on Instagram. He defends. He blocks shots out of nowhere. He makes the extra pass. He spaces the floor. He hits those momentum threes that feel like somebody just stepped on the other team’s throat.
But in this Sixers series?
He’s been too damn quiet.
And I don’t mean quiet like “he sucks.” Derrick White does not suck. That’s not the conversation.
I mean quiet like Boston needs more from him, and he knows it.
Through the first five games against Philly, White has been struggling hard offensively: 8.2 points per game, 29.8% from the field, and 21.2% from three. For a guy who is usually one of Boston’s biggest pressure-release valves, that’s rough as hell.
This is the dude who usually turns a defensive collapse into a wide-open corner three. The dude who usually gets the ball off a Tatum drive, sets his feet, and makes the other team pay for helping too much.
Right now, those shots aren’t falling.
And Boston needs the Buffalo back.
This Is Not a Trash Derrick White Article
Let’s be clear.
Derrick White is still valuable even when he’s not scoring.
That’s why he’s different.
A normal shooter goes cold and suddenly he’s just cardio in a jersey. White can still help you win with defense, ball movement, rim protection for a guard, communication, and all the little grimy stuff winning teams need.
He’s still averaging blocks in this series. He’s still guarding. He’s still making reads. He’s still one of the smartest players on the floor.
But the Celtics don’t need him to be a “little things” guy only.
They need him to be Derrick fucking White.
That means defend, make the right play, and then break somebody’s back with a three when Philly loads up on Tatum and Brown.
That’s the role.
That’s why this matters.
Philly Is Daring the Other Guys to Beat Them
The Sixers know what they’re doing.
They’re trying to make life annoying for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Bodies in the lane. Help defense. Late contests. Weird rhythm. Make Boston’s stars work, then live with the role guys having to hit shots.
That’s playoff basketball.
And when that happens, Derrick White has to punish them.
Not every time. Nobody is asking him to shoot 70%.
But when the ball swings and he’s open, he has to let it fly with confidence. No hesitation. No weird pause. No “let me think about this shot” bullshit.
Shoot the damn ball.
The Celtics’ offense looks completely different when White is aggressive. When he’s hitting, the floor opens. Tatum gets more room. Brown gets cleaner lanes. Pritchard gets to play faster. Horford and the bigs don’t have to survive in a clogged paint.
White hitting threes doesn’t just give Boston points.
It changes the whole geometry of the game.
Pritchard Has Been the Example
Payton Pritchard has been the perfect example of what Boston needs from its shooters.
Pritchard is playing like a dude who knows he belongs. He’s not asking permission. He’s not checking the room. He’s not acting like the moment is too big.
He’s letting that shit fly.
Game 4 was the clearest example. Pritchard dropped a playoff career-high 32 points and hit six threes, and suddenly the Celtics looked like the Celtics again. The ball moved. The shots came in rhythm. Philly looked overwhelmed.
That’s the version of the offense Boston needs.
Now, White doesn’t have to become Pritchard. He doesn’t need to drop 32.
But he does need to bring that same shooter mentality.
Catch it.
Trust it.
Fire it.
No fear.
No apology.
The Buffalo Needs to Start Spraying Again
Derrick White is usually Boston’s super-soaker shooter.
Not always the loudest guy. Not always the first name in the headline. But when the other team starts feeling good, he’s the guy who calmly pulls up and ruins their whole mood.
That’s what has been missing.
The Celtics don’t need him hunting bad shots. They don’t need hero ball. They don’t need him forcing nonsense just to prove he’s alive.
They need the clean ones.
The corner threes.
The trail threes.
The extra-pass threes.
The “Tatum got doubled and found the right guy” threes.
The ones that make Philly go, “Damn, we guarded that possession for 18 seconds and still gave up three.”
That’s the Derrick White effect.
And Boston needs it tonight.
This Is Where Veterans Respond
This is the playoffs. Nobody feels sorry for you.
Slumps happen. Bad games happen. Cold stretches happen. That’s basketball.
But the good ones respond.
White has been around long enough to know this. He doesn’t need some dramatic motivational speech. He doesn’t need to change who he is. He just needs to play with more force and trust his work.
The Celtics don’t need him to be perfect.
They need him to be present.
Take the open shot. Drive the closeout. Make the extra pass. Keep defending. Keep making winning plays. But don’t disappear offensively.
Because when Derrick White is aggressive, Boston is a nightmare.
When he’s passive, the offense gets tighter.
Final Thoughts
Derrick White is too good to be this quiet.
That’s the whole thing.
This isn’t me giving up on him. This isn’t me saying bench him. This isn’t some dumbass panic take after a few cold shooting nights.
It’s the opposite.
I’m writing this because White matters.
He matters a lot.
The Celtics can win this series without him shooting lights out, but if they want to close Philly out and actually look like a team ready for bigger problems, they need White to wake up.
Defend like always.
Move the ball like always.
Make the smart play like always.
But when that ball swings and Philly leaves you space?
Let it fly.
