The Celtics had a chance to close this thing out at home, and instead they let Philly walk into TD Garden, steal one, and drag this series back to Philadelphia.
Final score: Sixers 113, Celtics 97.
That’s not just a loss. That’s an annoying-ass loss. That’s one of those games where you sit there after the final buzzer like, “Bro, what the fuck are we doing?”
Boston still leads the series 3-2, so nobody needs to light themselves on fire yet. But this was the chance to kill the series, get some rest, and stop giving Philly life. Instead, the Celtics let Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey drag the Sixers off the floor and back into the fight.
Now Game 6 becomes a pressure cooker.
And honestly? Good.
Maybe this team needs to feel the heat a little bit.
Pritchard Needs to Keep Shooting
Let me start with Payton Pritchard, because I love this kid.
Pritchard has been one of the bright spots of this series, especially after going nuclear in Game 4. He dropped a playoff career-high 32 points, hit six threes, and helped Boston absolutely smoke Philly in that game. That was not just “nice bench production.” That was a little psycho with a green jersey pulling up like he owns the building.
That’s the version of Pritchard I want.
Shoot the fucking ball.
Don’t overthink it. Don’t hesitate. Don’t look around like you need permission from the stars. If you’re open, let it fly. If the defender is lazy getting over the screen, punish him. If the crowd is getting nervous and the offense is getting stiff, be the little maniac who wakes the whole damn team up.
In Game 5, he still gave Boston 12 points, but the Celtics needed more juice from everybody. When the offense gets weird and starts standing around, Pritchard’s pace matters. His confidence matters. His shot-making matters.
He plays like a guy who knows he belongs, and I respect the hell out of that.
The Celtics have stars, but playoff series are won by the extra guys too. Pritchard has already shown he can swing a game. Keep feeding that energy.
What Went Wrong
The biggest problem was simple: Boston did not close like a championship team.
They had chances. They had control. They had the home floor. And then the offense started getting stuck in the mud.
The fourth quarter was brutal. Boston went through a long scoring drought, and Philly took full advantage. That’s where playoff games turn into bar fights. You can play pretty basketball for three quarters, but when the other team starts throwing elbows late, you better be ready to answer.
The Celtics didn’t answer.
They got too comfortable. Too slow. Too casual. The ball stopped popping. The spacing got ugly. The offense looked like five guys waiting for somebody else to fix it.
That’s not Celtics basketball when they’re right.
When this team is at its best, the ball moves, the threes come in rhythm, the defense creates chaos, and everybody eats. When they’re bad, it turns into standing around, late-clock bullshit, and forced shots that make you want to throw a remote through the wall.
That was the difference.
Philly played desperate.
Boston played like a team that thought the series was already over.
Embiid and Maxey Were a Problem
Give Philly credit. I hate it, but give them credit.
Joel Embiid was a monster. He put up 33 points and gave Boston problems all night. Tyrese Maxey added 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, and that two-man game with Embiid started feeling way too comfortable.
That can’t happen again.
Embiid is too damn good to let him get rhythm touches without making him work for every inch. He’s huge, skilled, annoying, and he knows how to slow the game down into his world. If Boston lets Philly play Embiid-ball, the game gets gross fast.
Maxey is the speed demon. If he’s downhill and confident, now you’re in trouble. He doesn’t need much space. He just needs one bad angle, one lazy closeout, one possession where the defense is half asleep, and boom — he’s in the paint or hitting a three.
Boston needs to make those two uncomfortable again.
Pick them up earlier. Hit them with bodies. Make Embiid defend in space. Make Maxey see traffic. Stop letting Philly’s best guys feel like they’re controlling the temperature of the game.
What Has Worked This Series
The Celtics have looked best when they play fast, defend with an edge, and let the ball move.
Game 4 was the blueprint. Pritchard was firing. Tatum was cooking. The threes were falling. The Celtics made Philly look like a team ready for vacation.
That version of Boston can win this series easily.
The depth has worked. The spacing has worked. The bench scoring has worked when guys come in aggressive instead of passive. When Boston plays with pace and confidence, Philly has trouble keeping up.
The Celtics are more talented. I really believe that.
But talent doesn’t mean shit if you play lazy.
This is the playoffs. Nobody cares how good you are on paper. You still have to go take the win from somebody.
What Hasn’t Worked
The inconsistent energy is killing me.
One game they look like killers. Next game they look like they’re trying to win on autopilot.
That’s how teams get dragged into stupid situations. That’s how a series that should be over turns into a dogfight. That’s how you give a dangerous team one more breath, one more home game, one more chance to make things weird.
The Celtics need to stop playing with their food.
No more cute shit.
No more “we’ll figure it out later.”
No more waiting until the game gets tight to start caring.
Start fast. Stay locked in. Move the ball. Defend like grown men. Rebound like you actually want to go home. And when the shot is there, shoot it with your chest.
Especially Pritchard.
Let that kid fire.
What They Need To Do Better In Game 6
Boston needs to go into Philly and treat Game 6 like a must-win.
Not because they’re down. They’re not.
But because you do not want to give Embiid, Maxey, and that fanbase a Game 7 with momentum. Fuck that. End it now.
The Celtics need to clean up three things:
One: close quarters better.
No more dead offense late. No more long droughts. If the stars are getting trapped or the offense is stuck, move the ball and trust the shooters.
Two: make Embiid work.
Run him. Drag him into actions. Make him defend. Don’t let him just sit in his comfort zone and beat you up.
Three: keep Pritchard aggressive.
He has earned the green light. The kid is confident, he’s tough, and he brings a different kind of energy. Boston needs that little pitbull energy off the bench.
Final Thoughts
The Celtics are still in control.
But they made this shit more annoying than it needed to be.
This should’ve been over. They had Philly at home, up 3-1, with a chance to close the coffin and move on. Instead, they let the Sixers breathe.
Now it’s on them to fix it.
Tatum and Brown need to lead. The defense needs to tighten up. The ball needs to move. And Payton Pritchard needs to keep shooting like the little lunatic he is.
I love this Celtics team, but they need to stop acting like talent alone is enough.
Go to Philly.
Punch first.
Close the damn door.
