The Celtics had a chance to end this thing at home, and instead they pissed it away.
Now Game 6 is in Philly, and the Celtics need to walk in like grown men, not like a team still thinking about how badly the fourth quarter went in Game 5.
Boston still leads the series 3-2, but this is not the time to play with your food. The Sixers already punched back once. Joel Embiid looked alive. Tyrese Maxey is still a pain in the ass. And Philly has enough juice now to make this weird if the Celtics come out soft.
Game 6 tips tonight in Philadelphia, and the Celtics are expected to be healthy, with no injuries listed for the fourth straight game. Embiid is listed as probable but expected to play after putting up 33 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds in Game 5.
So no excuses.
Go close the damn door.
The Game 5 Fourth Quarter Was Disgusting
Let’s just get this out of the way.
That fourth quarter in Game 5 was fucking gross.
The Celtics went 3-for-22 from the field in the fourth quarter, missed their final 14 shots, and scored only 11 points in the frame. That tied a franchise playoff record for fewest fourth-quarter field goals and was their lowest-scoring quarter all season.
That is not “shots didn’t fall.”
That is a full offensive car crash.
The ball stopped moving. The rhythm died. Guys started forcing shit. Philly got more comfortable every possession. Embiid slowed the game down, Maxey started finding seams, and Boston looked like five dudes waiting for someone else to fix the problem.
That cannot happen tonight.
Not in Philly.
Not in a closeout game.
Not with a Game 7 hanging over your head like a damn storm cloud.
Who’s Shooting the Best Right Now?
The answer is easy for me: Payton Pritchard.
Pritchard had the game of his playoff life in Game 4, dropping a playoff career-high 32 points and hitting six threes in Boston’s 128-96 beatdown of Philly. That was not bench “help.” That was a man grabbing the whole game by the neck and saying, “I got this shit.”
That version of Pritchard needs to stay alive tonight.
Let him sling the fucking rock.
I don’t want hesitation. I don’t want him pump-faking himself out of rhythm. I don’t want him catching the ball wide open and thinking, “Should I?”
No.
Shoot it.
If Pritchard is open, let it fly. If he gets a little daylight coming off a screen, let it fly. If Philly’s defense is focused on Tatum and Brown, punish them until they have to respect the little psychopath running around the perimeter.
He brings pace. He brings guts. He brings that little pitbull energy every playoff team needs.
Boston needs more of that, not less.
Baylor Needs to Keep Firing Too
And yeah — Baylor Scheierman too.
Let Baylor shoot.
He has already shown he can step into these moments and knock down playoff threes. He hit a three in Game 5 off a Pritchard assist, and he also connected from deep in Game 4 when the Celtics were absolutely rolling.
That matters.
Because when the Celtics offense gets tight, they need guys who are willing to shoot like they belong there. Baylor can’t play scared. He can’t stand in the corner hoping nobody notices him. If the ball swings to him and he has space, fire that shit.
That’s how Boston keeps Philly honest.
The Sixers want to load up on the stars. They want to make Tatum and Brown see bodies. They want to clog driving lanes and turn the Celtics into a stuck offense.
Fine.
Then the role guys have to make them pay.
Pritchard. Baylor. Hauser. White.
Catch. Shoot. Live with it.
Who Needs to Do Better?
The stars.
That’s not disrespect. That’s the job.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have to be better closing games. Not just scoring. Not just getting numbers. I mean controlling the game when it starts getting ugly.
When Philly pushes, Boston needs Tatum and Brown to settle the offense, make the right read, attack the right matchup, and not let the whole thing turn into late-clock bullshit.
Game 5 got too messy.
Tatum and Brown both owned that the execution was not good enough after Boston’s fourth-quarter collapse.
Good.
Now fix it.
Tatum needs to be decisive. If the double comes, move it early. If the lane is there, go strong. If Embiid is hanging back, pull him into actions and make him work.
Brown needs to stay aggressive but under control. No wild drives into three bodies. No loose-handle nonsense. Get downhill, punish mismatches, and defend like a maniac.
The Celtics don’t need hero ball.
They need killer ball.
There’s a difference.
Who’s Shooting the Worst?
Honestly, the worst shooter right now is the Celtics offense when it gets tight.
That sounds like a cop-out, but it’s real.
In the fourth quarter of Game 5, it wasn’t just one guy missing. The whole machine broke. Boston shot 13.6% in the fourth quarter, while Philly shot 52.9%.
That’s the game right there.
You can’t go dead for a whole quarter in the playoffs and expect to survive.
The Celtics need to stop turning cold stretches into emotional meltdowns. Missed shots happen. Fine. But the response has to be defense, pace, rebounding, and better looks — not everyone standing around like the Wi-Fi went out.
If the threes aren’t falling, get to the rim.
If the rim is packed, move the ball.
If Embiid is sitting in drop, make him defend space.
If Philly switches, attack the mismatch.
Don’t just jack up panic threes and pray.
Embiid Is the Problem
The Celtics need to deal with Embiid better. Period.
He had 33 points and 8 assists in Game 5, and the Sixers used his post gravity to open up looks for Maxey, Paul George, and Quentin Grimes. Philly also cooked Boston late, outscoring them 28-11 in the fourth.
That’s unacceptable.
Embiid is too good to shut down completely. That’s not the goal. The goal is to make everything hard.
Make him catch it farther out. Make him see different looks. Dig down at the right time. Don’t overhelp from obvious spots. Don’t let Maxey get clean runway off Embiid’s gravity.
And most importantly: make Embiid defend.
Run him. Screen him. Drag him into actions. Make him move his feet. Make him work every damn possession.
If he gets to sit in the paint, walk into post touches, and control the game like a giant evil traffic cop, Boston is asking for pain.
Maxey Cannot Get Comfortable
Tyrese Maxey is the other headache.
He’s fast, annoying, fearless, and once he gets downhill, the whole defense starts scrambling like somebody kicked an ant pile.
Boston’s screen navigation needs to be sharper. The Sixers have been able to hurt Boston’s drop coverage and pick-and-roll defense, with Maxey taking advantage of weak screen navigation and bigs stuck trying to recover.
That has to be cleaned up tonight.
Get over screens.
Communicate.
Don’t let Maxey turn the corner clean.
If he’s going to beat you, make him earn it over bodies.
No free rhythm. No easy floaters. No bullshit.
Who Needs to Keep Balling?
Pritchard, obviously.
Baylor, if the minutes are there.
Tatum and Brown, because that’s the whole damn point.
And I’ll add Derrick White too.
White doesn’t always need to have the loudest stat line, but he needs to be involved. Boston is at its best when White is touching the ball, making quick reads, defending, and sneaking into those killer threes that make the other team want to scream.
The Celtics cannot become a two-man team late.
That’s when they get predictable.
They need the full weapon rack.
Tatum pressure.
Brown downhill.
White control.
Pritchard chaos.
Baylor trigger.
Hauser spacing.
Bigs doing dirty work.
That’s the version that wins.
What Boston Needs Tonight
The formula is simple.
First: start fast. Don’t let Philly smell blood early. They’re at home. Their crowd is going to be loud. Shut that shit down.
Second: move the ball. The Celtics are not at their best when the offense turns into slow-motion isolation garbage.
Third: let the shooters shoot. Pritchard and Baylor should not be playing scared. If they’re open, fire.
Fourth: make Embiid work on both ends. Don’t let him control the game from a rocking chair.
Fifth: close quarters like adults. That fourth-quarter bullshit from Game 5 cannot follow them into Game 6.
Final Thoughts
Tonight is not complicated.
The Celtics are better than Philly.
Now prove it.
Don’t talk about Game 5. Don’t cry about missed shots. Don’t wait for Game 7. Don’t give Embiid and Maxey one more night to make this thing nasty.
Go into Philly and end it.
Let Pritchard sling the fucking rock.
Let Baylor fire when he’s open.
Let Tatum and Brown lead like stars.
Defend with anger.
Move the ball.
Close the damn series.
